about

I wrote this song during a time when my practice and study of Buddhism was all encompassing. The Buddhist have observed that space is infinite, unchanging and without it we could not exist. Sound familiar? You can use the same description when speaking of the divine. When I think of the big picture I visualize the human silhouette against the sky and think of our place in space and in the universe. We are expressions of the divine not unlike the shadow puppets I made as a child; always shape shifting who we are. The end section was inspired by the practice of Tonglen. Described by Pema Chodren: "The tonglen practice is a method for connecting with suffering —ours and that which is all around us— everywhere we go. It is a method for overcoming fear of suffering and for dissolving the tightness of our heart. Primarily it is a method for awakening the compassion that is inherent in all of us, no matter how cruel or cold we might seem to be." I'll carry you... brother, sister, mother, fathe

lyrics

Hard times
making mountains out of foot hills
dead from a look that kills
and I’m worried about my bills

Peace time
And I’m bored out of my mind
Looking for a like kind
To take me out of here

Hands into the light
Silhouettes against the sky
Shadow puppets
1 2 3 4 5
making rabbits
flying birds
breaking habits
using words

beyond all the muss and fuss
there’s a big sky in front of us
space for us to live it up
if we need to we can shake it up

B line
Heading straight for the sub lime
Trying hard to take my time
Cause I’m only here only now…

Hands into the light
Silhouettes against the sky
Shadow puppets
1 2 3 4 5
making rabbits
flying birds
breaking habits
choosing words

So Fine
I can trace you with a hot line
Gonna have to make you mine
And we’ll get out of here out of here

I'll carry you
Brother, Sister, Mother, Father
